The disqualification of the national teams of Russia and Belarus in hockey is extended for the next season

The IIHF cites security risks, not Russia’s hostilities in Ukraine, as an argument for maintaining the disqualification.

Due to the disqualification, Belarus will not be able to participate in the qualification tournament for the 2026 Olympic Games this year. On the other hand, Russia has not yet been excluded from the Olympic tournament, which it could enter, taking into account the ranking position in which it was at the time of the application of the IIHF disqualification.

According to the decision of the IIHF Council, Russia and Belarus will not be allowed to participate in IIHF competitions from February 28, 2022 due to the war in Ukraine. Russia also lost the right to host the 2023 adult championship and the junior championship
