Both teams surprisingly started without their number one players, who were both suffering from minor injuries. The Canadian captain did not field Félix Auger-Aliassime, the 29th-ranked player in the world, and Finland had to do without top singles player Emil Ruusuvuori (69th).
The first point for the reigning champions was won by former world No. 3 Milos Raonic, who is currently only in the fourth hundred of the ranking. The experienced tennis player, who returned to the Davis Cup team for the first time since 2018, defeated Patrick Kaukovalt in 69 minutes 6:3, 7:5. In the second singles, however, Otto Virtanen equalized, beating Gabriel Diallo 6:4, 7:5.
In the event of a 1:1 tie after the singles matches, the final doubles match was decided according to the current model of the competition. In it, Virtanen together with Harri Heliövaara defeated the Canadian couple Alexis Galarneau and Vasek Pospisil 7:5, 6:3 and secured the second promotion point for the team of captain Jarkk Nieminen.
The other quarter-final pairs in Málaga are the Netherlands and Italy and Great Britain and Serbia. The finals of the team competition for the “salad bowl” will take place on Sunday, November 26.
