Just in time for Easter, RTL is bringing “The Passion” back to the screens. After the premiere in Essen in 2022, the live telling of the Bible story will come from Kassel this time. The casting of two main characters has now been confirmed: Jesus and Judas.

RTL 2022 has already caused a stir with its live music event “Die Passion”. In the end it was successful: around 3.14 million viewers watched the show from Essen on TV screens.

Another edition of the “Greatest Story of All Time” is planned for March 27th this year – this time from Kassel. Now it is clear who their most important star will be: Musician, presenter and actor Ben Blümel will take on the role of Jesus of Nazareth.

The 42-year-old from Berlin celebrated several successes in the German charts shortly after the turn of the millennium. Under the simple stage name Ben, he had the biggest hit of his career in 2002 together with singer Gim and the song “Engel”.

Now Blümel has made it from “angel” to messiah. “My expectations for ‘The Passion’ are actually huge,” he is quoted by RTL in view of his important role. “It’s really great to be able to be a part of it and, above all, to give everything to be able to reinterpret the greatest story in the world through modern pop songs. So, I’m really up for it!”

Jimi Blue Ochsenknecht becomes a villain

In addition to Blümel, another important cast has been confirmed: Jimi Blue Ochsenknecht will take on the role of Judas at Easter. A challenge that is as big as it is exciting, says Uwe Ochsenknecht’s son: “I always wanted to play a real villain – and Judas is one of the most famous villains in history.”

At the same time, the 32-year-old says he wants to try to portray the character, who is “not just ‘evil,'” in as many layers as possible: “I’m really looking forward to working out all the nuances.”

“The Passion” was actually supposed to be shown on RTL for the first time in 2020, but the corona pandemic thwarted the plans. Instead, it appeared just in time for Easter 2022. “Germany is looking for the superstar” winner Alexander Klaws played Jesus in the premiere edition. Mark Keller starred as Judas. EllaFINALLY (Maria), Martin Semmelrogge (Barabbas), Henning Baum (Pontius Pilatus) and Laith Al-Deen (Petrus) also played other roles. Thomas Gottschalk acted as the overarching narrator.

This time, actor Hannes Jaenicke will take on the role of narrator, as was already known last year. However, it is not yet clear who will portray the remaining characters in the upcoming edition of “The Passion”.
