A woman opened fire in a megachurch in Houston, Texas, injuring two people, including a seven-year-old boy. The child was in life-threatening condition, Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said. An adult suffered a gunshot wound to the leg.

The 36-year-old was shot by two police officers who happened to be there, the police announced on Sunday. Accordingly, she entered the church in Houston on Sunday afternoon accompanied by her son and then fired several shots with a rifle. Her motive was initially unclear.

The police said the woman had previous mental illnesses and was forcibly admitted in 2016.

Woman shot around during the break

The Lakewood Church is housed in a former stadium and, with around 16,800 seats, is one of the largest religious sites in the USA. Popular Christian pastor and best-selling author Joel Osteen will preach at the megachurch, whose services will be televised weekly and have millions of viewers.

The pastor said he was “devastated” after the gun attack. According to him, the woman opened fire during a break between two church services. According to him, the consequences would have been more devastating if she had shot during a church service. “We thank God” that the incident did not occur during the 11 a.m. service, said the 60-year-old.

In the USA there are repeated gun attacks with many deaths. Churches were also repeatedly the scene of bloodbaths. In one of the worst incidents of this kind, an attacker killed 26 people during a service at a Baptist church in Sutherland Springs near San Antonio in November 2017.
