The head of the European diplomacy criticizes Trump: “The military alliance cannot work according to the tone of the US president”

NATO cannot be an “alliance a la carte”, declared Monday the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell, as a reaction to the statements of Donald Trump who evoked the fact that the US should no longer defend the countries of the Alliance whose financial contribution is insufficient.

”Let’s be serious! Let’s be serious! NATO cannot be an alliance a la carte”, said Josep Borrell before the informal meeting of the development ministers of the European Union, held in Brussels, AFP and Reuters report.

“In the era in which we live, a military alliance cannot function according to the tone of the president of the United States: ‘yes, no, tomorrow, no, it depends’. NATO exists or it doesn’t exist,” added Borrell irritated.

“During this (US election) campaign, we will see and understand many things. Don’t count on me to comment on all the stupid ideas that will be expressed during a national campaign in the United States,” he warned.

During an election rally, former US President Donald Trump, who will probably face Joe Biden in the presidential elections in November, evoked a conversation he allegedly had with the leader of another NATO member state, without revealing his name, informs Agerpres.

Biden: “It’s worrying and dangerous”

“One of the presidents of a large country stood up and said, ‘Well, sir, if we don’t pay and are attacked by Russia, will you protect us?’ ”, the billionaire tells before revealing his answer: “No, I wouldn’t protect you. In fact, I would encourage them (the Russians) to do whatever they want to you. You have to pay your bills”.

The statement comes after Trump pressured Republican members of Congress to bury a bill that would provide new aid to Ukraine and reform immigration policy.

President Joe Biden reacted. “The fact that Donald Trump admits that he intends to give Putin the green light for more war and violence to continue his brutal attack against a free Ukraine and to expand aggression against the peoples of Poland and the Baltic countries is worrying and dangerous.” , Biden said, quoted in a White House statement.

For his part, the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, warned about the statements that “undermine the security” of the Alliance. “Any suggestion that Allies will not defend each other undermines the security of all of us, including the United States, and exposes American and European soldiers to increased risk. NATO remains ready and able to defend all Allies. I am convinced that the US will remain a strong and committed ally within NATO, regardless of the winner of the presidential elections”, stressed Jens Stoltenberg.
