An American woman and a Belizean man were killed at a beach club in the Mexican resort town of Tulum after a firefight broke out between drug dealers, local authorities confirmed Sunday.
Prosecutors in the Caribbean state of Quintana Roo emphasized that the American woman was not related to the alleged drug dealer who was also killed in the Friday night shooting.
Prosecutors did not release the woman’s name or hometown, and the U.S. Embassy did not respond to a request for comment.
Prosecutors denied reports in local media that the woman and the man were a couple. They also added that cocaine and other narcotics were found on the dead man. According to them, the suspected perpetrators of the shooting have been identified and they are looking for them.
This is not the first time that tourists have died in the resort town in the crossfire of Mexican drug gangs, MTI reminds. In 2021, two tourists were shot dead in a restaurant in Tulum during a firefight between drug dealers.
