An American was sentenced to 21 years in prison in Russia for abusing children

A Moscow court imposed a sentence of 21 years in prison on United States citizen David Barnes, who, according to the indictment, abused his children. This was reported by the TASS agency today with reference to the court announcement. The American was arrested after his arrival in Russia in 2022, since then he has been held in custody. He denies guilt.

US media previously reported that Barnes was in a dispute with his Russian ex-wife over custody of his two children. Barnes traveled to Russia on a tourist visa in January 2022 after not seeing his sons illegally taken from the US for several years. He was arrested on the basis of his ex-wife’s report that he raped the children during their stay in Texas between 2014 and 2018. He was deprived of parental rights in Russia, on the contrary, the American court rejected the accusation due to lack of evidence.

According to the verdict of the court in Moscow, Barnes will serve his 21-year sentence in a penal colony with a strict regime.

In recent years, several American citizens have been arrested and sentenced to long terms in Russia. Washington, which has been supporting Kiev in its defense against a Russian invasion for the past two years, accuses Moscow of wanting to exchange them for Russians detained in the United States.

Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin said it was possible to reach an agreement on the release of American journalist Evan Gershkovich, who has been detained in Russia for almost a year.
