Off-duty police in Texas shot and killed a woman who opened fire on worshipers at a church at the start of Sunday services, seriously injuring a small child, authorities in Houston said.
Troy Finner, the police chief of the big Texas city, said at a press conference that the incident happened in the early afternoon during the Spanish-language service in a well-known church, Lakewood Church. What was said about the circumstances was that a 4-5-year-old child arrived with the woman who opened fire with a rifle.
Off-duty police officers present at the church returned fire and fatally wounded the assailant. During the shooting, the child who came with the woman was injured and is being treated in hospital in a critical condition. An older man was wounded in the leg, reports MTI.
The briefing said that the woman shouted during the shooting that she had a bomb, but the authorities did not find any explosives in the attacker’s backpack or car.
The motive for the shooting has not yet been released. The pastor of the Lakewood Church, the site of the incident, is a well-known church figure Joel Osteentelevision evangelist and businessman.
