According to the cited source, both patients who were confirmed to have non-toxigenic cutaneous diphtheria were hospitalized at “Victor Babeş” Hospital.
The disease occurs in people from vulnerable groups, generally drug users, who live in precarious conditions.
INSP representatives state that since 1990, no cases of non-toxigenic cutaneous diphtheria have been registered in Romania.
“It’s cutaneous diphtheria. Non-toxigenic strains, unrelated to the respiratory form that is produced by the strains that produce the toxin and which is a public health problem”, stated the Minister of Health Alexandru Rafila.
