The average net salary in December 2023 increased by 6.6%, reaching 5,079 lei, 314 lei more compared to November 2023, according to data published by the National Institute of Statistics.

The average net salary in Romania increased in December 2023

Compared to December of the previous year, the average net salary in Romania increased by 15.5%. In addition, the average gross salary in December 2023 was 8,301 lei, 535 lei higher than in November 2023, which means a 6.9% increase in the average salary package.

The highest values ​​of the average net salary were recorded in the manufacture of coke oven products and products obtained from crude oil processing (12,710 lei), and the lowest in hotels and restaurants (2,825 lei).

The real wage earnings index was 108.3% in December 2023 compared to December 2022. The real wage earnings index was 106.3% in December 2023 compared to November 2023. Compared to October 1990, the real wage earnings index was 253.3%, 15.1 percentage points higher than the one recorded in November 2023.

According to the INS, during the year there are fluctuations in salary income determined, mainly, by the granting of annual awards and holiday bonuses, especially in the months taken as a basis for comparison (December, March/April).

They influence the increases or decreases depending on the period in which they are granted, ultimately leading to the blurring of the fluctuations in the monthly salary for the entire year. The evolution of the real wage depends, both on the fluctuations of the average net wage and on the inflation rate.

According to the INS, in December 2023, in most activities in the economic sector, the level of the average net salary increased compared to November 2023, as a result of the granting of occasional bonuses (quarterly, annual bonuses, for the winter holidays, for special performances or 13th salary), rights in kind and financial aid, amounts from net profit and other funds (including securities). Also, the increases in the average net salary were due to production achievements or higher receipts (depending on the contracts/projects), as well as staff reductions with lower salary earnings than the average, from some economic activities.

The most significant increases in the average net salary at the level of CAEN Rev.2 sections/divisions were recorded as follows: by 57.1% in the extraction of upper and lower coal, by 34.8% in the extraction of crude oil and natural gas, respectively with 32.9% in the production and supply of electricity and thermal energy, gas, hot water and air conditioning; between 20.0% and 30.0% in water transport, financial intermediation (with the exception of insurance and pension fund activities), storage and auxiliary activities for transport, printing and reproduction on media of records, manufacture of coking products and of products obtained from crude oil processing; between 10.0% and 19.5% in the metallurgical industry, real estate transactions, other extractive activities, manufacturing of tobacco products, telecommunications, motion picture, video and television program production activities, audio recording and music publishing activities (including activities broadcasting and transmission of programs), manufacture of other products from non-metallic minerals, forestry and logging (including fishing and aquaculture), water capture, treatment and distribution, manufacture of other means of transport, manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations, collection and wastewater treatment.

The decreases in the average net salary compared to the month of November 2023 were determined by the granting in the previous month of occasional bonuses, rights in kind and monetary aid, amounts from the net profit and from other funds (including securities). Also, the decreases in the average net salary were determined by production failures or lower receipts (depending on the contracts/projects).

The most significant decreases in the average net salary at the level of sections/divisions CAEN Rev. 2 were registered as follows: by 8.8% in the manufacture of machines, machinery and equipment nec, respectively by 6.2% in the extraction of metal ores; between 1.0% and 3.5% in the manufacture of furniture, the manufacture of road transport vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers, other industrial activities nca, the manufacture of rubber and plastic products, postal and courier activities, leather tanning and finishing (including the manufacture of travel and leather goods, harness and footwear; preparation and dyeing of furs).

In the budget sector, in the month of December 2023, there were increases in the average net salary compared to the previous month in the public administration (+5.0%, mainly as a result of the granting of outstanding salary differences, related to the months of 2023 or application of the legal provisions in force), respectively in health and social assistance (+2.8%).

In education, the average net salary decreased compared to the previous month (-2.3%) as a result of the reduction of the amounts representing the hourly payment of teaching staff during the school holidays.
