The Ukrainian basketball player Volodymyr Yermakov lost his life at only 17 years old, in Düsseldorf (Germany), after being stabbed on Saturday evening, informs the Kyiv Basketball Federation.

Artem Kozachenko, Yermakov’s teammate at the ART Giants U19 team, is receiving medical treatment in a hospital in Essen after he was also attacked. His condition is stable and his life is not in danger.
“Before a match, young basketball players were attacked with knives in the street for the reason that they are Ukrainian” – Basketball Federation of Ukraine, quoted by European Pravda.
The teammates of the two Ukrainians spent the night at the hospital, but the doctors could not save Yermakov.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry announced that the German police had detained the killer. According to reports on social networks, the two athletes were attacked by a group of Arab migrants.
“According to the available information, the police have already detained the attacker. Investigations are ongoing. The Consulate General in Düsseldorf has already held discussions with the Chief of Police in Essen.
The consuls stressed the need for a quick investigation and bringing the perpetrator to justice,” Oleh Nikolenko, the spokesman for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, wrote on Facebook.
Born in 2006, Yermakov played for the Ukrainian national team at the U16 European Championship in Bulgaria (2022).
