Both matches will kick off at 9:00 p.m.
After a two-month winter break, on Tuesday, February 13, the first two stadiums will once again play the official anthem of the Champions League. In the first of the two opening round of 16 meetings, defending champion Manchester City will face off against Copenhagen.
Fourteen-time Champions League winner Real Madrid will begin their journey with the elimination phase in Leipzig. The eyes of Slovakian fans will focus mainly on the Danish capital, whose colors are defended by the Slovakian representative Denis Vavro.
Surprise against the defender
Footballers of FC Copenhagen won the promotion to the elimination part of the most prestigious football competition for the second time in the club’s history. In the demanding A-group, they took the second place with eight points, leaving behind the Turkish Galatasaray Istanbul and the English club Manchester United.
In the group, they managed to get only a point from the first three meetings, when they drew with Galatasaray and then lost to the winner of the group, Bayern Munich and the Red Devils. They tipped the scales in their favor only in the rematch with United, whom they defeated in the rematch after a seven-goal shootout.
The point was secured by a draw with the German team, and the narrowest possible victory over the Istanbulites opened the door to the quarterfinals. They scored eight goals in six duels and conceded the same number.
Midfielder Lukas Lerager took care of three accurate shots, two of which fell from the boot of Diogo Goncalves. Coach Jacob Neestrup will not be able to count on the first-named, because he saw a red card in the last match of the group with Galatasaray.
The reigning Danish champion is third in the home Superliga after playing 17 matches of the autumn part with 33 points and a three-point loss to the leader Midtjylland. The first measurements of the forces of the spring part of the Superliga are scheduled for Friday, February 16.
Manchester has not lost yet
While Copenhagen is considered the surprise of the year and made it to the spring stage after thirteen years, nothing but progress was expected from defending champions Manchester City. The Englishmen confirmed the assumptions and sovereignly dominated the A-group with six wins and eighteen points.
They blew the net behind the opponent’s goalkeepers 18 times, while the ball traveled in the opposite direction only seven times. The best scorer with five goals is the Norwegian Erling Haaland, who leads the productivity of the entire prestigious competition.
In the domestic Premier League, they are on an eight-game unbeaten streak, they did not find a winner even in the FA Cup, in which they advanced to the round of 16. Two days before Christmas, they also became the first-time winners of the FIFA Club World Cup. The last time they had to bow their heads was on the sixth of December against Aston Villa in a home competition.
Both teams competed against each other in last year’s edition of the Champions League. First, in the third round of the group stage, he enjoyed an unequivocal home triumph over Manchester City (5:0). A goalless draw was born in the second leg at Parken Stadium.
Leipzig has fond memories of the last match between them
In the German Red Bull Arena, Leipzig football players will welcome the most successful LM club Real Madrid. The team led by , advanced to the elimination part of the competition from the second place of the G-group.
They collected twelve points for two wins over Young Boys Bern and Red Star Belgrade. Only Manchester City was above their strength. Together they scored 13 goals and conceded ten. Striker Lois Openda, who scored four times, was the most frequent scorer.
In the domestic Bundesliga, Leipzig is in fifth place with a three-point loss to fourth-placed Dortmund, while they have come up short in only three of the last five meetings. In the other 21st round, they drew 2:2 with Augsburg.
The second club that did not hesitate in the group was Real Madrid
Just like Manchester City, Real Madrid’s footballers went through the Champions League group without losing a single point. The White Ballet twice did not find a vanquisher in the ranks of Union Berlin, Naples and Braga. In six meetings, Carlo Ancelotti’s men conceded seven goals, and scored sixteen times.
The best scorer in LM is four-goal 20-year-old midfielder Jude Bellingham. However, he will not expand his statistics for now, because he sprained his ankle in Saturday’s (2/9) league match against Girona. The expected period of his absence is three weeks.
In the Spanish La Liga, after 24 matches played, the players from the capital have the highest rank. In addition, the Madrid players are on an 18-match unbeaten streak in the competition. They left without points in the sixth round from the turf of the city rival Atlético.
The same opponent also stopped them in the round of 16 of the Copa del Rey in January, which means that they will definitely not be able to defend the Spanish King’s Cup.
The last time both teams met was last year in the group stage. In the first match, the Madrid team won 2:0 on their home turf, in the rematch, the Leipzig football players were more successful with a 3:2 result.
